The hit ‘Stranger Things’ has become something of a powerhouse for young talent, with its leads increasingly involved in Hollywood, making films, promoting brands and attending the most glamorous festivals. And, of course, at the head of this movement was Millie Bobby Brown, its protagonist, the famous Eleven, “Eleven”, who since the first season has become one of the most coveted faces of big companies.
But Millie has competition: In Season 2, Sadie Sink joined the cast, which started out as a supporting actress and gained prominence over the course of the episodes. And as the episodes went by, she also gained popularity and recognition, to the point of being chosen by the prestigious director Darren Aronofsky to work on her latest film, “The Whale”, which brings Brendan Fraser back to the screen. In addition, she has become a powerful influencer on the networks, with 25 million followers on Instagram.
She’s barely half the size of Brown, but it’s also true that while Eleven has had a hard time straying from the youthful side in her performances, Sink, on the other hand, has been tackling one more adult project after another that showcases her acting versatility. What is certain is that although no one knew her, when she entered “Stranger Things” Sink she was not a newcomer: at that point, the actress born in Texas twenty years ago had already worked in theatre, film and television.
Who is Sadie Sink? He was born twenty years ago in Brenham, a city in Washington County, Texas, United States. She is the penultimate of five children, with three older brothers and a younger sister, children of the marriage formed by Lori, a maths teacher, and Casey, a rugby coach.
“Theatre was a big part of life growing up and my family was always very supportive of me and my career”
“My family and I are very close,” he told the British edition of Glamor this 2022. “My best friend in the world is my brother Mitchell,” he assured the medium. “Obviously we’ve known each other for a lifetime and we trust each other, we’re open and honest with each other. This is very important to me. It’s a very special bond.”
EARLY RACE
The “Stranger Things” star’s relationship with acting started out small. Sink and her brother have been recreating scenes from “High School Musical” at home, according to the outlet, and their mom has seen their potential.
“We were born into a rather sports-oriented family and none of us were exposed to the acting industry growing up. But for some reason Mitchell and I had this attraction towards performing arts, especially musical theatre,” she told Vogue Singapore.
At the age of seven, she participated in a small comedy show called “The Best Christmas Show Ever” in her hometown. He only had one line, but he remembers liking it more than anything. Later, in a community theater production called “The Secret Garden” it came clear to him. “That’s when I decided I wanted to stick with it and do it right,” he told the outlet.
In 2012, he starred in the acclaimed ‘Annie’ on Broadway and the family moved from Texas to New York so that Sink could build a career. “My family has always been very supportive of me and my career,” he told Glamour. “Theater was a big part of life growing up.” That move is similar to one made by Spanish-born Eleven’s parents, with Spanish parents who moved from Florida to Hollywood when they discovered their magnetic daughter’s talent.
THE FIRST JUMP
When she was about 13, Sink made the leap from stage to screen, she recently told Collider. “And that’s when your Broadway career takes a temporary hiatus and they’re like, okay, see you when you’re 18,” he told the outlet. “So during that time, I think I auditioned for a few TV series or movies here and there. And then that’s when I ventured into that side of acting. But yeah, I’ve always wanted to be on stage, and I still do, but I definitely love movies and TV.”
In the following years he participated in some series, such as “The Americans”, of 2013, or “American Odyssey”, of 2015. In 2016 he made his film debut with “Chuck”, a title to be followed by others such as “The glass castle” and “Eli”. This 2022 debuted “Dear Zoe” and in December the long-awaited “The Whale” had its US premiere, starring Brendar Fraser and directed by Darren Aronofsky.
But the ultimate boost to her career came in 2017 when she was cast as Max Mayfield in ‘Stranger Things’, the first season of which had been a hit. At first, the creators of the series, the Duffer brothers, considered Sink, who was 14 at the time, too old for the role. “I just begged and begged them to give me more material so I could show you something new,” she told Fashion last summer.
Eventually they accepted and she was invited to a reading with Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, and Caleb McLaughlin, who gives life to Lucas Sinclair, who she already knew. “My brother and I were playing in a park where all the kids on Broadway go to play between shows, and this is where I met Caleb and Gaten way before ‘Stranger Things,'” Sink said, as released Just Jared in 2017.
In the fourth season of the series, the last one available so far, his character took more prominence. The fifth and final installment does not yet have an official release date.
