The Wanganui native played the so-called second row. He was one of the great fighters, but he was also controversial. In a 1978 match against Wales, he pretended to be pushed by an opponent and jumped into a car. New Zealand ruled from the penalty kick to win 13:12, but the referee claimed that he had whistled another offense. Haden later admitted that the fall had been filmed.
The last match for the All Blacks took place in 1985 against Argentina. At the end of his career, he was an agent for celebrities, such as model and actress Rachel Hunter.
