ŽILINA – Sad news hit the Slovak hockey scene when Milan Grandtner, an important figure of this sport, left us. He succeeded not only as a hockey player, but especially as a coach who led the team to victory in the national league.
On Wednesday, November 27, at the Old Cemetery in Žilina, they said goodbye to Ing. Milan Grandtner, a former hockey coach, who left this world forever on November 23 at the age of 89.
Victory in the National Hockey League
The native of Nitra was very prominent in Slovak hockey, and had many successes as a player and coach in his career.
Milan Grandtner started his hockey career as a player in Poprad, where he shone on the coaching bench. During the 1969/70 season, he led the Poprad team to victory in the Slovak National Hockey League. This success was one of the most important chapters in his coaching career.
Dukla Trenčín and the formation of the future elite
During the 1974/75 season, Milan Grandtner was part of Dukla Trenčín, which gradually began to develop into a stable first league club under the guidance of coach Jaroslav Walter. At that time, players such as captain Ivan Grandtner and František Hossa (father of Marián and Marcel Hossa) were among the important members of this team.
Music in hockey Žilina
Milan Grandtner also left an indelible mark in Žilina, where he trained the “green-yellow” senior team. During the 1967/68 season, in the years 1979 to 1981 and in the year 1987/88, he was the head coach of the hockey club Žilina, and under his leadership the team experienced periods of development and establishment.
He christened the book
In August 2016, Milan Grandtner together with the mayor of Poprad, Jozef Švagerko, took part in the christening ceremony of the third part of the book History of hockey in Poprad for free. The ice cubes, with which the book was christened, symbolized Grandtner’s lifelong commitment to this sport.
He went down in sports history
Milan Grandtner made his mark in many hockey history. “We did not go to hockey in the days of his active activity, but sports history writes about Milan Grandtner’s great contribution, especially to Poprad and Žilina hockey. So thank you, may he rest in peace in hockey heaven with so many others.” said Adrika with reverence, who paid homage to this legend.
