Background: In February, the federal government decided to introduce the national day of remembrance on March 11th.

The day ties in with the European Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Terrorism, introduced a year later after the 11 March 2004 bombings in Madrid.

The corresponding order for mourning flags applies to “all official buildings in the state, the municipalities and municipal associations as well as other corporations, institutions and foundations under public law that are subject to state supervision”, as the Ministry of the Interior had announced.

The day of mourning is to be celebrated annually from now on.
