“The Queen of Beauty” was written in 1996 and is the first play by the popular Irish playwright Martin McDon, who is popular in Latvia.
The grown-up daughter lives with her mother in a small village in Līnen, spending the day in a never-ending routine and blaming each other. Morina hopes to break free from loneliness and her mother’s manipulative influence. One day Pato shows up here, giving her a real hope for happiness.
Actors Mārtiņš Kalita, Inese Kučinska, Kaspars Gods and Artūrs Irbe participate in the performance.
K. Gods, who played the role of Pato, has also played in both previous productions of M. Makdon’s plays in Liepāja – in the play “Lantern Hour” after the play “The Skull of Connemara”, created by Rolands Atkočūns, and Regnārs Vaivars “Klibais no Inišmanas”.
“Lantern Hour” was a very fun piece – Egon and I and Dombrovskis were digging out the dead in the cemetery, it was very fun. We like Macdon very much, but the audience doesn’t understand whether we should laugh or not.
The jokes are like that – on the border. How do you laugh in the theater when you’re dressed nicely? “Maybe you laugh at home,” says the actor.
The new production is also a fun piece about rural life, where each character is a bit confused. “It’s as tragic, but if everything were so tragic, we wouldn’t be able to survive,” says Gods.
The director is strictly demanding to play the way Macdon wrote, but this author is good at that – if he speaks as the play says, then the character of the character is immediately understandable.
It is very difficult for M. Kalitas to portray a very old woman as a mother. With the help of makeup, the actor turns into an unknown person, but it is the easiest – purely technical. “First of all, the difference in thinking, which is not easy at all,” he emphasizes.
The actor has already portrayed the woman in “Shakespeare” with Elmars Senkovs, but this performance and image are completely different and require a lot from the actor. Representation of not only women but also men every time from scratch. “Shakespeare” has such a lot of commentary.
“It’s more psycho-realistic, there’s a longer stage time, and the emotional rise is much higher,” he says.
The secret of choosing a man for the role of mother, J. J. Gillinger without revealing.
“She just has no one else,” Kalita explains why her mother doesn’t release her daughter desperately all her life. “Her future is a poor house, she alone cannot take care of herself, she remains the only choice to live together.”
Will Morina manage to break out of the cage? “I think we have an open finale,” says I. Kuchinka, a daughter.
She admits that this could be one of the most difficult productions of the season. “I was amazed at the division of roles, because I already feel like a mother. Jill told me, “Mom, you’ll still be able to play, play so much!” I can thank him very much for that, because it is an extremely interesting experience for me. It is still interesting for me, if the role challenges me, I get satisfaction from it, ”says the actress.
