Jakarta –
Chinese New Year or Chinese New Year should be celebrated with great joy and fun. This does not seem to have happened to the Chinese businessman, Hui Ka Yan alias Xu Jiayin.
This is because the founder of the Chinese property giant Evergrande Group must pay off mounting debts in 2023.
Quoted from Forbes, Sunday (22/1/2023), Hui Ka Yan had promised in an internal letter dated January 1 and was widely reported by local media including the Securities Times.
He also reiterated his promise to repay debts of more than US$300 billion or the equivalent of Rp.4,500 trillion after the company disappointed investors by missing the deadline set for its restructuring plan at the end of last year.
Evergrande previously stated that they were pushing for a restructuring with narrowing differences.
In his letter he stated that 2023 will be a key year in fulfilling Evergrande’s responsibilities and handing over the apartments that have already been sold.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Evergrande confirmed the authenticity of the letter. However, he did not provide further comment.
Hui’s wealth has plunged 93% in the last five years to its current level of US$3 billion. This happened after the company was hit by an increasingly swollen debt crisis.
