Sacrilege Motors: Restoring Classic Porsches with Electric Conversions

Philip Wagenheim and Bobby Singh managed to combine three things that many fifty-somethings only dream of. They fell in love with old iron, their hobby became their job and they can sell it even in a world that no longer understands the achievements of the past. However, Porsche is not just any old iron, so even if they added battery power to the vintage restoration, they will be able to show off the conversion at the Pebble Beach show.

The title does not exaggerate. The company that Phil and Bobby started ten years ago is really called Sacrilege Motors, automotive sacrilege. But their passion for classic Porsches brought them together much earlier.

Financier Wagenheim was looking for someone to take good care of his 993 Turbo coupe in the late nineties. Insiders know that this type represents the pinnacle of the air-cooled era. Combining the best of old and new, the car began to rise in price like a veteran while it was still in production.

He could hardly have come across a more capable jack-of-all-trades than Bobby Singh. At that time, he had, for example, completed work on the renovation of a historic Boeing 747 for Pan Am Airlines.

Restoring youth to old cars is a beautiful job, and Porsche is a brand that never loses its clientele. Of course, if you live in America, you need a little advertising.

Thus the company Sacrilege Motors was born. With conversions to electric drive, he shows that he is not only looking to the past. After all, Tesla once started electrifying roadsters from Lotus.

The latest venture is the 964 Turbo Look series coupe from the 1980s. The last model with a completely lowered front end and completely protruding headlights. And at the same time the first with menacingly extended rear fenders. A muscular man with a romantic face.

Instead of a flat six-cylinder engine, a 370 kilowatt Tesla engine took the innocent-looking veteran to 100 km/h in four and a half seconds.

Batteries with a capacity of 64 kilowatt hours are installed in the front and back of the floor. The Porsche will travel 320 kilometers with them. Electricity also powers the power steering, brakes and air conditioning compressor.

Bobby’s team took great care to maintain a historically faithful appearance even after this bathtub transplant. Modern diode optics are built into the classically shaped headlights, a gear lever with an aluminum head is used to select forward and reverse travel.

Maximum attention to detail is confirmed by the five pointers. Although they show battery voltage and kilowatts of power consumption, they have the original scales and font. The charging speed of the battery is shown by a completely unobtrusive series of colored diodes hidden in the speedometer.

California’s Pebble Beach competition is the ultimate event of its kind, a veteran’s Christmas. Fifteen thousand spectators descend on it and the world’s rarest cars are on display.

A strict jury will not let anything on the pier without pedigree and proper care or patina. The sacrilegious Porsche 964 will find itself in the best company this weekend.
