Reduced to the pure text of the Gospels, Schütz’s St. John Passion does not require a large ensemble. Musically, it tells the story of Jesus’ last journey – from the arrest on the Mount of Olives to the trial before Pontius Pilate and the crucifixion. To this day, this music is performed in many cathedrals and churches in the Good Friday liturgy.
St John Passion by Bach
The mighty St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is completely different. Excerpts from the monumental work can be heard in the Musica program on Good Friday from 8 p.m. in the DOMRADIO, as well as sacred music by Lajos Bardos, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Arvo Pärt, among others.
