The Armed Forces of Belarus have traditionally collaborated with the Russian Armed Forces in conducting military exercises, such as ZAPAD, which takes place once every four years, or the “Slavic Brotherhood” trilateral exercise, which takes place once a year until to 2021.
In the exercises, Belarus mainly involves elite units of the Belarusian armed forces, which generally make up a minority of the total size of the armed forces. Special task forces were used to negotiate protests after the 2020 presidential election in Belarus and also participated in the crackdown on protests in Kazakhstan in January 2022. Forces outside the elite units lack combat experience, the which would significantly limit their practical usefulness in warfare.
The Armed Forces of Belarus have a wide range of weapons at their disposal, but their core consists of equipment manufactured during the USSR. Depreciation of equipment and deviations from maintenance requirements reduce the number of practical weapons many times over, concluded SAB.
