SAARBRÜCKEN – In view of the current financial challenges facing organized sport in Saarland, the CDU parliamentary group is calling for increased financial support from the state. This demand was strengthened after the publication of a report by Professor Dieter Dörr, which showed the need for additional funds for the state sports association.
Raphael Schäfer, the parliamentary managing director of the CDU Saar state parliamentary group, and Patrick Waldraff, sports policy spokesman for the parliamentary group, emphasize the urgency of the situation: “Organized Saar sports are facing major financial challenges that cannot be overcome without further help from the state.” They emphasize that the state sports association has been pointing out this problem for a long time and that this has now been confirmed from a constitutional perspective.
Particularly problematic is the fact that the so-called sports eight, a portion of the budget for sports, has hardly been increased for around 20 years and has not been adjusted for inflation. “This needs to be discussed,” said Waldraff. He proposes that additional funds be made available in the state budget for the structural support of popular and elite sport, which are constantly adjusted to inflation developments.
