Thomas Gauch and Vojtech Suchomer. Two defenders who stood together for the Crocodiles Hamburg on the ice in the penultimate season. Two left-handed shooters who joined the Saale Bulls last season. Two players for whom the past successful season ended prematurely due to injury after the first playoff semi-final game in Weiden. Two top performers who will also ensure order in front of the Halle team in 2023/24 – Thomas Gauch and Vojtech Suchomer have extended their contracts with the Saale Bulls. “Both have steadily improved over the past seasons,” says head coach Marius Riedel. “I hope that after their injuries have healed and after the end of the preparation at the beginning of the main round, both of them can build on the level and their performances from the playoffs.”
Even if the careers of the two defenders have had a lot in common in recent years, their tasks in the defensive network differ considerably. While ‘Gaucho’ acts as an offensive defender, ‘Vojto’ is a typical stay-at-home defender. The 25-year-old Gauch, born in Mannheim, officially completed his sixth year in the Oberliga last season after stints in Essen, Krefeld, Herne and most recently in Hamburg. If you deduct the two (short-term) main rounds for Krefeld (two games) and Herne (18 games) due to injury, the number 37 in Halle increased his third division point tally for the fourth time in a row. After nine points (one goal), 18 points (three goals) and 40 points (nine goals), the left-handed shooter in the Bulls jersey increased his tally to 46 points, setting a new personal record. “‘Gaucho’ is a great defender, has a physical presence and always gets involved in the offensive,” said Riedel about the defender with the best points of the past season. His twelve goals (once in the majority, four times to win) mean a new career record for the 25-year-old, who was able to score in double figures for the first time ever in a season.
For Suchomer, who is celebrating his 29th birthday today, it was the ninth Oberliga season in a row – and with 13 points, the native of Munich also ended up with a new personal best in the third division in the statistics. In addition, the left-handed shooter, who is playing for the Saale Bulls for the third time after 2017/18 and 2019/20, scored his first premier league goal since the 2018 season with the 2-2 equalizer in the derby in Leipzig on October 14 /19 – it was the first goal in a competitive game in Halle in the third season in Halle for the number 51 in Halle, who, after two and eleven points, completed his most personal MEC season to date with 13 points. No coincidence for Riedel, but rather the result of constant development. “’Vojto’ has changed his playing style significantly in the last year. He can still play hard and is important in the defensive zone, but at the same time he has improved his passing game a lot.”
The Saale Bulls are pleased to be able to rely on the recovered Thomas Gauch and Vojtech Suchomer in the coming season and wish their two defenders a successful and injury-free 2023/24 season and ‘Vojto’ a happy birthday.
