S-Bahn lines will be restricted until January, airport shuttles will also be affected

Staff shortages are causing restrictions on S-Bahn and regional trains in the Rhine-Main area.

Frankfurt – The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsbund (RMV) is running out of staff. Several connections on S-Bahn lines were canceled on Sunday due to an unoccupied signal box. The RMV has now announced for four lines: there will be restrictions until January.

According to the RMV, there are likely to be restrictions until 8 January 2023 due to the high level of sickness absence among drivers and signal box staff on lines S5, S6, S8 and S9. The airport shuttle S8 to the airport is also affected Frankfurt airport. Specifically, this means:

  • The S5 only works every 30 minutes on Saturdays until December 31st.
  • The S6 departs every 30 minutes from Monday to Friday until 31 December.
  • Additional journeys of the “Airport Shuttle” on line S8 between “Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof” and “Kelsterbach Bahnhof” will be canceled until 08.01.
  • The S9 will be canceled until January 8th. between “Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof” and “Kelsterbach Bahnhof”.

Signal box in Frankfurt-South unmanned – breakdowns and delays on Sunday (December 11)

The Sunday excursion by train is also a test of patience. An unoccupied signal box in Frankfurt-South causes some breakdowns and delays in the S-Bahn and the regional trains around it Frankfurt. This was announced on Sunday morning (December 11) by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV).

There are currently the following restrictions on S-Bahn lines:

  • S4: in the direction of Frankfurt South, the trains between Frankfurt Central Station and Frankfurt-South. The trains run without restrictions in the direction of Langen
  • S5: runs only between Frankfurt Central Station and Friedrichsdorf
  • S6: it only runs between Frankfurt Central Station and Friedberg. Furthermore, the Frankfurt Messe and Frankfurt Galluswarte stops are no longer available

During this period, lines S5 and S6 will operate at Frankfurt Central Station from long-distance train platforms instead of S-Bahn platforms.

There are also planned delays, cancellations and cancellation of stops on the S8 and S9 lines. The S8 trains in the direction of Frankfurt do not stop at Mainz-Bischofsheim. The reason for this, however, is not an unoccupied signal box, but a switch failure near Mainz-Bischofsheim.

There are currently cancellations and delays with several regional trains in the Rhine-Main area.

  • RE2 (Frankfurt Central Station – Mainz Central Station)
  • RE3 (Frankfurt Central Station – Mainz Central Station)
  • RB11 (Frankfurt Central Station – Bad Soden (Taunus)
  • RB58 (Großkrotzenburg Bahnhof – Hanau – Offenbach – Rüsselsheim – Frankfurt)
  • RB75 (Babenhausen – Darmstadt – Mainz – Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof)

According to RMV, the outage lasted until Monday (Dec. 12) at around 6:00am. According to initial results, long-distance traffic is unaffected by the unmanned signal box. From A new timetable also applies in and around Frankfurt on Sundays. (hex)
