Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the fourth processor from AMD with 3D V-cache, these processors have two layers of silicon on top of each other, with the upper one containing only an additional L3 cache. This is an additional 64 MB, which is extremely useful for gaming, where it visibly increases performance.
But why not place the added cache directly on a single piece of silicon? The reason is mainly production costs, which increase with the area of the chip. Also, one significant defect would mean trashing a much more expensive piece of semiconductor. In this way, AMD has a much freer hand when sorting processors, and layering chips on top of each other does not have significant disadvantages in terms of temperatures or latency.
Better than sixteen core
Low latencies are also why gamers will prefer the eight-core Ryzen 7 7800X3D over the sixteen-core Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The tested processor has only a single computing core (CCD), while the higher model has two CCDs, and their communication between them in some cases increases latency and reduces frames per second in games.
