Detention of former MP
The former MP was detained by CBA agents at the Warsaw airport on Wednesday afternoon. At the same time, his wife Emilia Hermaszewska was also detained in Warsaw. The politician flew to Warsaw from Tirana, where he met with the former president and prime minister of Albania Sali Berisha.
Czarnecki and his wife were taken to the Silesian branch of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Katowice, where interrogations lasted until late in the evening. Czarnecki was led out of the prosecutor’s office building before 11 p.m. “Political theater. The authorities are making games because they can’t do anything else,” he told journalists at the time.
After the hearing, he and his wife were taken to a detention center. On Thursday, the hearings of both detainees are to continue – PAP learned. Only after these activities are completed will the prosecutor’s office provide more details about the charges and the findings of the proceedings.
Irregularities in the Collegium Humanum
The investigation conducted by the CBA together with the Silesian division of the PK concerns irregularities at Collegium Humanum. CBA officers previously detained the rector of the Higher School of Social and Economics in Gdańsk, the rector and founder of the Academy of Applied Sciences in Wrocław and a professor of the Jagiellonian Academy in Toruń, who were charged by the prosecutor with bribery and paid active protection. In the background, there are financial benefits worth PLN 630,000.
The private university was established in 2018 in Warsaw. It offered quick courses that allowed one to obtain an MBA diploma – as determined by journalists from “Newsweek”. Such diplomas allow, among other things, to apply for positions on supervisory boards of State Treasury companies. The credibility of documents issued by Collegium Humanum was supposed to be ensured, among others, by foreign universities, but it turned out that they did not have the authority to conduct MBA studies. Among the graduates of CH were: politicians, presidents and members of the boards of State Treasury companies, officers of special services and military commanders – as it turned out from the journalistic investigation.
In mid-March, the spokesman for the Polish Accreditation Commission, Przemysław Nowak, announced that the Silesian Division of the National Prosecutor’s Office had brought charges against two individuals detained by the CBA, including the director of the Polish Accreditation Commission, Artur G., and a member of his family, Marta G., who was supposed to have obtained a job at the university as a form of bribe for the director of the PKA office.
The prosecutor also established compulsory administration for this university and other entities associated with it and its rector Paweł Cz. Funds were also secured for the fine Cz. was facing – PLN 250,000, a cash benefit – PLN 40,000 and for the return of benefits he allegedly obtained as a result of this crime – over PLN 1.1 million.
