Going into Sunday’s final day of twelve singles, the United States leads 11-5 against Europe in the 2020 Ryder Cup. They only need 3.5 points to lift the trophy on the Wisconsin greens. .
Barring a huge turnaround, the Ryder Cup is well on its way to returning to the United States. Largely favorites of this 2020 edition, the Americans have only 3.5 wins to win in the twelve singles scheduled for Sunday on the greens of Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. In other words, the task of Europeans promises to be immense. After winning 3-1 the foursomes on Friday and Saturday and 3-1 the four-ball on Friday, the United States released a little ballast in the four-ball on Saturday. The four games of the afternoon ended with a score of 2-2, which however allows Steve Stricker’s men to lead 11-5 before the last day. The Europeans started to believe in an incredible comeback on Saturday afternoon when they gained two points in a row to come back to 9-5. Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton first beat Tony Finau and Harris English by a score of 9.5 to 8.5, after a very close game where the Europeans won two holes and the Americans only hole no. 13. Then the Spanish pair Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia dominated 2 & 1 (there was one hole left, they were two points ahead) Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth, winning six holes against four.
Americans unroll to end the day
But the Americans did not let themselves be destabilized, and returned to victory thanks to Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau, 3 & 1 winners of Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland, notably winning the last four holes. Finally, in the last part of the day, Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa made short work of Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy, beating them 4 & 3, leaving only one hole for European pair, No.5. So here are the Americans with six wins ahead of Sunday’s singles, which will begin with a clash between Xander Sc Chaudele and Rory McIlroy from 6:04 p.m. French time. Three wins and a draw will be enough for them to lift the trophy. A formality?
