The Ryder Cup is a money machine – the fight among cities to be allowed to host this golf competition is correspondingly tough. For the players it’s all about one thing: honor.
It is undisputedly considered the greatest spectacle in golf: When the 44th Ryder Cup is decided between the United States and Europe this weekend, sports fans in 623 million households in 201 countries around the world will be able to watch this thrilling duel between Europe and the United States. Golf fans from 121 countries applied for around 300,000 tickets to the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.
That is once again more than the 270,000 spectators from 90 countries who witnessed the high home victory (17.5:10.5) of Europe’s best golfers in Paris five years ago. Despite this worldwide popularity, the twelve professionals on both teams are not, as usual, about high, often exorbitant prize money. Only the caddies will receive almost 4,000 euros this week, and the bag carriers will also be reimbursed for all expenses.
