Ryanair’s Transition to Boeing 737-8200: Cost Reduction and Increased Passenger Traffic

The largest European low-cost airline Ryanair has relied on the new generation Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which will help it reduce costs and increase passenger traffic in the coming years.

Now the basis of the Ryanair fleet is made up of Boeing 737-800 airliners from the Next Generation family. This model was developed in the 1990s and is no longer produced by Boeing.

Although the Boeing 737-800 is still fairly modern even two decades later, new environmental regulations and rising kerosene prices are making it less attractive to airlines.

Replacement aircraft

To replace the 189-seat 737-800, Boeing offered airlines a new 737 MAX 8 model with a similar capacity. The main difference between the new aircraft and its predecessor is the new engines. Thanks to them and other modifications, it consumes 16% less fuel.

Ryanair has agreed with Boeing to create a special modification of the new airliner that could carry more passengers. The model was named Boeing 737-8200. It differs from the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in that it can carry not 189 passengers, but 197 — that is, 4% more while maintaining the length of the fuselage.

In order for the Boeing 737-8200 to comply with aviation safety standards for evacuation time after the increase in capacity, two emergency doors were added to it for emergency exit of the cabin. As a result, the total number of doors in the aircraft was 10.

A 16% savings in kerosene and the greater capacity of the new aircraft will enable Ryanair to improve its performance in the coming years. The airline and its subsidiaries already received 119 Boeing 737-8200s at the beginning of the summer of 2023, and by the spring of 2024 their number in the fleet should increase to 173 units.

New name for Boeing Ryanair

Interestingly, initially the special aircraft model for Ryanair was called the Boeing 737 MAX 200, where 200 meant rounded cabin capacity.

After Boeing 737 MAX flights were stopped due to two crashes and the reputation of new airliners suffered, airlines and Boeing began experimenting with new positioning of airliners. So the Boeing 737 MAX 200 became the Boeing 737-8200.
