‘Ryanair victims, demand repayment and compensation’ (Brussels)

State Secretary for Consumer Protection Eva De Bleeker (Open VLD) encourages future victims of travelers to file a complaint against the airline if necessary. Ryanair cabin crew at Zaventem and Charleroi will start a three-day strike next week.

State Secretary for Consumer Protection Eva De Bleeker (Open Vld) reminds that ticket holders for a canceled Ryanair flight are entitled to an alternative flight or to a refund and compensation. Ryanair cabin crew at Zaventem and Charleroi will start a three-day strike next week.

According to De Bleeker, the strike cannot be regarded as force majeure for Ryanair, and consumers for whom no alternative flight is provided are entitled to a refund and compensation of 250, 400 or 600 euros, depending on the distance of the flight. Anyone who arrives at the final destination with a delay of more than three hours is also entitled to compensation.

Complaint

The State Secretary calls on consumers to contact Ryanair about this and to submit a complaint to the FPS Mobility should the airline refuse reimbursement or compensation. Anyone who has booked a package holiday can contact the organizer of that trip, in most cases the travel agency.

Ryanair cabin crew at Zaventem and Charleroi airports will stop work on Friday, through Sunday, Christian unions announced last week. According to the unions, Ryanair, which has 650 employees in Belgium, refuses to invest in a personnel policy and wages are not paid correctly.

De Bleeker wants to make it easier for consumers to claim compensation for canceled flights, she says. To this end, she has been working for some time on a unique consumer counter where all consumers can go with questions and reports. That should be active at the beginning of 2023.
