Several online travel and booking platforms have stopped offering low-cost Ryanair airline tickets on their pages. Among the platforms that have removed “Ryanair” are “Booking.com”, “Kiwi” (Kiwi) and “Kayak”, the world agencies informed.
The Irish carrier welcomed its removal from travel portals, which it compared to “pirates”, but warned it could cause difficulties for consumers. According to the airline, the levels of unoccupied aircraft seats on its flights will increase by 1-2%.
The airline has been in a long-standing dispute with online booking platforms and has taken legal action in the US against Booking.com’s owner, Booking Holdings, and its subsidiaries, including Kayak.
Ticket revenue will also be hit in the short term, as the company has announced it will respond by reducing fares for passengers who book directly through its website. However, the low-cost airline doesn’t think sales and passenger numbers will be materially affected for the whole of 2024, nor are profit expectations.
Ryanair’s latest reports showed December passengers jumped 9% to 12.5 million year-on-year, but the seat load factor fell from 92 to 91%. It comes amid more than 900 Ryanair flights being canceled last month because of the war between Israel and the Hamas group and the suspension of flights to Tel Aviv and Jordan.
