On Thursday, Ryanair passengers received a letter booking tickets for Budapest for July or later. It turns out that the airline will charge another HUF 3,900 (EUR 10) retroactively to everyone, because this is the extra profit tax introduced by the government per passenger. In the case of destinations outside Europe, even more, HUF 9,750 (EUR 25).
If this is not acceptable, you can cancel your booking until June 16, otherwise the amount will be automatically deducted from your bank account. Upon cancellation, the full amount previously paid will be refunded.
Ryanair in a statement on Wednesday called on the government to withdraw the tax. According to the company, due to the epidemic, the war in Ukraine and the soaring oil prices, there are currently no profits in the industry, which is why it is “more than stupid” to impose a special tax on them.
Earlier, Wizz Air president also said this situation there is no point in talking about an extraprofitand since then it turned out that the company he closed with a huge loss the previous financial year.
The government announced in late May that an extra-profit tax is levied on several sectors. They expect HUF 30 billion in revenue from the airlines. Minister Gergely Gulyás said at the time that it was not justified to transfer the tax to consumers, but
“If we see this en masse and to a large extent, we will take action against it, and the government will have the legal means to take away any extra benefits that may arise, so we would not recommend this to anyone.”
