A Ryanair flight from Rome landed unevenly in Charleroi on Saturday evening after the plane’s nose gear broke during landing. Passenger Pascal Grosjean (60) from Mortsel witnessed the landing, together with his wife, and provided us with the images via 4040.
It immediately became clear that it was not an everyday landing, Pascal says. “After the rear wheels hit the ground, people started applauding as usual. But when the nose wheel hit the ground, it became clear that something was wrong and it became quiet.”
There was a “deafening noise and a lot of vibration in the aircraft”. The images show how the aircraft drives over the runway with jerks and jerks. “The aircraft shook and eventually came to a diagonal stop on the track.”
At that moment the pilot announced that they might have a flat tire, but an inspection by the fire brigade would reveal the real problem: the front wheel failed during landing. The landing gear appeared to have a break there.
The aircraft could not be towed away, and was therefore evacuated about three hours after landing. Passengers were taken to the terminal by a shuttle bus. The long wait was mainly due to the lack of such shuttle buses at Charleroi airport. Pascal had nothing but positive comments for Ryanair’s cabin crew. “My wife and I would like to thank the pilots and staff for handling this correctly and professionally and for providing the occupants with correct information in a timely manner,” he assures. “We noticed a certain fear among some children, but with this information they were able to put the incident into perspective better.”
