Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary was hit by two climate activists with two cream pies as he stood outside the European Commission building in Brussels to protest repeated strikes by air traffic controllers in the EU – which have impacted the Irish low-cost airline – and deliver a petition signed by apparently over a million passengers against airspace closures.
“Welcome to Belgium,” said one of the activists as he tossed the cake. “Stop the air pollution,” said the other activist. O’Leary – who posed next to a cardboard picture of President Ursula von der Leyen – laughed at the stunt. “Warm welcome in Brussels today to celebrate our 7 new routes for Winter 2023. Passengers are so satisfied with our routes and petition that they are celebrating with a cake. We have low and tasty fares!” he wrote on X- Ryanair herself tweeted by posting a photo of O’Leary stained with cream.
The protest by activists comes as Ryanair pilots in Belgium announced a new strike for 14 and 15 September – the fourth in two months – over wage and working conditions issues.
