Ryan Gosling reflects on a haunting moment in ‘La La Land’
Ryan Gosling, who starred in the 2016 blockbuster La La Land alongside Emma Stone, recently revealed a memorable moment from the film that still bothers him today. In an interview for WSJ Magazine‘s “The One” video series, Gosling confessed that if given the chance, he would reshoot the dance sequence with Stone, which appeared on the movie’s promotional poster. Gosling’s reason for the desire to redo the scene boils down to what he refers to as his “La La Hand.”
What haunted Gosling
Gosling recalled the specific moment that bothers him, explaining how he unintentionally placed his hand in a slanted position while dancing with Stone. This hand gesture became prominent on the film’s poster. Despite receiving advice that the hand posture was uncool, Gosling held his ground and ignored the warnings at the time. Nowadays, however, he regrets his decision and believes it completely detracted from the overall energy and aesthetic of the scene.

When asked if his background in dance assisted with his portrayal of Sebastian in the film, Gosling candidly responded, admitting that the experience did not prove beneficial in the end. He humorously self-criticized his own performance, describing himself as “hamburger-hands Gosling” due to his dissatisfaction with the hand positioning. Nevertheless, despite his reservations, Gosling’s role in La La Land earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and the film garnered a total of six Academy Awards that year.
