A weight of 1.5 million dollars. This is the amount that the clan of boxer Ryan Garcia will have to pay to his opponent Devin Haney due to an overload on the scale. Beer in hand, the sultry 25-year-old boxer drank his bottle dry before coming forward for the weigh-in. The lightweight showed up 1.4kg overweight. An overcharge which is not surprising for Garcia who had himself bet 500,000 dollars for each additional pound above the limit.
The extravagant boxer, who has a record of 24-1 including 20 by knockout, will nevertheless have the right to fight in the ring against Devin Haney, WBC super-lightweight champion (31-0). The latter leaves a winner since in addition to validating his weighing, he negotiated with his opponent a check for 1.5 million dollars as financial compensation.
The WBC welterweight belt, which was on the line, will remain in Haney’s hands due to this latest event. The fight will take place on Sunday April 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It will be broadcast on the DAZN streaming platform.
