Virginia Water (dpa) – Ryan Fox has won the prestigious tournament at Wentworth Golf Club for the first time.
The 36-year-old New Zealander played a round of 67 at the end of the BMW PGA Championship and came out on top with a total of 270 strokes, just ahead of Aaron Rai and Ryder Cup player Tyrrell Hatton. The two second-placed Englishmen each needed one stroke more in Virginia Water, England.
Fox received prize money of 1.53 million US dollars (1.43 million euros) for his fourth success on the former European Tour. The best German in the DP World Tour event, which was endowed with nine million US dollars (8.43 million euros), was Yannik Paul with 284 strokes in tied 45th place.
Dress rehearsal for Ryder Cup team
The tournament near London served as a dress rehearsal for the European Ryder Cup team. All twelve players who will compete against the favorite selection from the USA in the traditional continental comparison in Rome in just under two weeks were at the start at the Wentworth Golf Club.
The 44th edition of the Ryder Cup will take place from September 29th to October 1st at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. Two years ago, the Europeans suffered a bitter 9:19 defeat in the US state of Wisconsin.
