Ryan Flamingo hopes to finally say goodbye to Sassuolo after this season. The midfielder and defender soon noticed that he did not fit in with the Italian club. Through FC Utrecht he now hopes to take the steps to ultimately achieve his big goal: Oranje.

Flamingo switched from Almere City to Sassuolo in 2021. “It was difficult at first, because no one speaks English there,” he reflects on the Ziggo program Kick ‘t Met. “They really shout at you, with temperament. He (the trainer, ed.) would get angry and I would think: what are you saying? I’ve experienced some really crazy trainers there.”
Flamingo also did not feel at home there from a sporting point of view. “So I performed really well. I had become the best player in the youth team. We had a striker then, he had scored twelve goals, and he was allowed to make his debut, but he was Italian, while I wasn’t even on the bench yet. Then I thought: I actually have no business here,” continues the youth international, who was loaned out to Vitesse by Sassuolo last season. “Just the feeling of being in the first team, I needed that.”

Vitesse ultimately decided to include the purchase option in the rental contract, but Sassuolo had a so-called buy-back clause, and immediately took Flamingo back. “I came there and I just saw again: I’m not going to play. Others get priority. Then I really wanted to go to Vitesse again. I thought: let me just play there for another year, then I can join the Dutch national team and achieving all my goals.” That did not work, because Vitesse did not have the financial resources.
Ultimately, Utrecht, which also negotiated a purchase option, became his next temporary station, but he is still stuck with Sassuolo. Flamingo hopes that this will change very soon. “Yes, I am done with that club,” said Flamingo, who suspects that the Serie A club simply wants to ‘loot’ him.
