Arte is broadcasting this Thursday evening the first episodes of “Rwanda, the color of blood”, a poignant series carried by Michaela Coel which addresses the consequences of the Rwandan genocide.
What is it about ?
The story of Kate Ashby, a young child rescued from the 1994 Rwandan genocide, who was adopted by Eve Ashby, a famous British female prosecutor specializing in international criminal cases.
Raised in Britain, Kate is now in her 20s and works as an investigator for Judge Michael Ennis. When Eve takes up a case at the International Criminal Court, prosecuting a Rwandan war criminal, badly extinguished fires reignite, forcing Eve and Kate, supported by Michael, to plunge back into a painful past…
Rwanda, the color of blood is broadcast on Thursdays May 4 and 11 from 8:55 p.m. on Arte. The 8 episodes are already available in full on Arte.tv as well as on Netflix.
A thriller under high tension
After The Honorable Woman, which told the story of a businesswoman played by Maggie Gyllenhaal who finds herself embroiled in the intricacies of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, British director and screenwriter Hugo Blick this time explores a complex geopolitical subject from the angle thriller with Rwanda, the color of blood (Black Earth Rising in VO).
The series thus chooses to approach the Rwandan conflict, and its consequences, under the prism of a police investigation, thus making it possible to better understand the war and the impact of the international community in the management of the conflict.
Through this investigation into the mysteries of the International Criminal Court, a whole procession of compromises following the tragedy of 1994 is gradually revealed.
Composed of 8 episodes, Rwanda, the color of blood is carried by Michaela Coel, an actress and screenwriter revealed in Great Britain by the comic series Chewing Gum, who marked the spirits with I May Destroy You, in which she approached without detour issues of rape and consent.
The actress, who was also on the poster for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, gives for the occasion the reply to John Goodman, who slips into the skin of the mentor of the young woman. Noma Dumezweni (The Watcher), Abena Ayivor, Lucian Msamati (Gangs of London) and Tamara Tunie (New York Law & Order) complete the cast.
