Casper Ruud managed to get his revenge against Stefanos Tsitsipas after the defeat suffered in the final in Monte Carlo last Sunday. On the clay of Barcelona (ATP 500), the Norwegian, n. 6 in the world, beat the Greek, (no. 7) 7-5 6-3. For Ruud it is the 11th title of his career, the first at the 500 level. Previously he had “only” won 250 tournaments (10 times). For Tsitsipas, the Barcelona tournament remains haunted given that he suffered his fourth defeat in the final after those in 2018, 2021 and 2023.
First career triumph for Struff: he wins in Munich
With the same score (7-5, 6-3) Jan-Lennard Struff won the ATP 250 tournament in Munich. The 33 year old German, n. 28 in the world prevailed over the American Taylor Fritz, n. 15. This is the first international title of his career for Struff. Previously he had lost three times in the final: again in Munich in 2021 and last year in Madrid and Stuttgart.
Fucsovics profeta in patria: vince a Budapest
Marton Fucsovics was also a prophet at home as he won the ATP 250 in Bucharest. The Hungarian, n. 82 in the world, he beat the Argentine Mariano Navone, n. 52, with a score of 6-4 7-5. For the 32-year-old Hungarian it was the fourth final of his career, the first after the one lost in 2021 in Rotterdam. For him it is the second joy, after that of Geneva in 2018.
Women: Rybakina triumphs in Stuttgart, Stephens queen of Rouen
In the women’s field, Elena Rybakina made the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart, Germany, her own. The Russian naturalized Kazakh tennis player, n. 4 in the world and winner against Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals, she got the better of the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, n. 27, folded with a double 6-2. For Rybakina, this is the 8th title of her career, the 3rd of 2024. In Rouen, France, the WTA 250 tournament was instead won by Sloane Stephens. The American, n. 39 in the world, she beat the Polish Magda Linette, 60 in the WTA ranking, in the final with a score of 6-1 2-6 6-2. For Sloane Stephens it is the 8th title of her career (out of 11 finals played).
Madrid, Berrettini forfeit due to flu
Next week the Masters 1000 in Madrid begins which, unfortunately, will not see Matteo Berrettini at the start. The Roman tennis player announced his withdrawal due to flu. “In the last few days I have been dealing with a flu condition which has now turned into tonsillitis and fever – his words -. My doctor advised that it would be risky to try to compete in Madrid. Now my focus shifts to recovering as quickly as possible possible and on the preparation for Rome”.
