Casper Ruud clumsily came off the edge of the jump in the second round of the US Open. The first set was to be decided in a tiebreak, and there Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven (25) equalized the longest drop with seven points to Ruud’s four points.
In the second set, however, the Norwegian reacted. Van Rijthoven had several chances to reach 5-3, but Ruud saved himself again and broke on the direct. He then served for the set and won 6-4. In the US Open he is best of five sets.
Even in the third set, Ruud was the best when it mattered. He won 6-4 and thus had the opportunity to decide the game in the fourth set.
Van Rijthoven crashed and appeared to injure his leg in the fourth set. Ruud got a standing ovation from the crowd after going to van Rijthoven to help him stand up and ask if he was okay.
The fourth and final set also went to Ruud, who won 6–4.
With that, he made it to the third round of the US Open, a bribe to his best career record in the tournament.
Van Rijthoven is ranked number 117 in the world. Earlier this summer, he scored his first ATP victory when he won the Rosmalen Championships at home in the Netherlands. Then he beat none other than world number one Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Tim van Rijthoven was very close to breaking the magical limit of 100 in the standings, he was number 101 in July. Now he is number 117.
The Dutchman made it to the second round in New York when he beat China’s Zhizhen Zhang after a long game, but after nearly four hours van Rijthoven took home the match 3–2.

Ruud has had an extraordinary season, regardless of what happens in the rest of the year. The 23-year-old played his first Grand Slam final. On clay in Paris, he was beaten by his great model Rafael Nadal. After the French Open, Ruud finished fifth in the world.
He secured at least NOK 1.87 million in prize money when he beat his Dutch opponent on Wednesday night.
The US Open sets a new prize money record this year, with winners receiving NOK 25.8 million each. For the first time, the total prize pool of the US Open exceeds $ 60 million, or 596 million crowns after Wednesday’s rate.
Ruud scored his 41st win of the year when he sent home his opponent from New York and the US Open on Wednesday night.
In the third round there will be the American opposition for Ruud. He faces the winner of Sebastian Korda and Tommy Paul.
Ruud never made it past the third round of the US Open, which took place two years ago. But then Matteo Berrettini got in the way and blasted Ruud off the pitch in three consecutive sets in just over two hours. Now the tableau is such that the two can meet in a quarter-final in Flushing Meadows.
Ruud is number seven in the world, while Italian Berrettini is number 14. The 23-year-old from Snarøya beat Berrettini in the final at Gstad in July.
