Ruud advances to the third round of the US Open – VG

Casper Ruud clumsily came off the edge of the jump in the second round of the US Open. The first set was to be decided in a tiebreak, and there Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven (25) equalized the longest drop with seven points to Ruud’s four points.

In the second set, however, the Norwegian reacted. Van Rijthoven had several chances to reach 5-3, but Ruud saved himself again and broke on the direct. He then served for the set and won 6-4. In the US Open he is best of five sets.

Even in the third set, Ruud was the best when it mattered. He won 6-4 and thus had the opportunity to decide the game in the fourth set.

Van Rijthoven crashed and appeared to injure his leg in the fourth set. Ruud got a standing ovation from the crowd after going to van Rijthoven to help him stand up and ask if he was okay.

The fourth and final set also went to Ruud, who won 6–4.

With that, he made it to the third round of the US Open, a bribe to his best career record in the tournament.

Van Rijthoven is ranked number 117 in the world. Earlier this summer, he scored his first ATP victory when he won the Rosmalen Championships at home in the Netherlands. Then he beat none other than world number one Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Tim van Rijthoven was very close to breaking the magical limit of 100 in the standings, he was number 101 in July. Now he is number 117.

The Dutchman made it to the second round in New York when he beat China’s Zhizhen Zhang after a long game, but after nearly four hours van Rijthoven took home the match 3–2.
