He did point out that the infections would have gone better if the basic measures had been observed more strictly. “We have not been successful enough to highlight the importance of those basic measures.”

Because that did not work, the infections are now rising very quickly, according to Rutte. That is why the cabinet has had to decide on a limited lockdown of three weeks, which took effect last Saturday. “You have to give a blow now,” Rutte said about those measures for the coming weeks, such as the closure of catering and supermarkets at 8 p.m. and non-essential shops at 6 p.m.

If this makes it possible to remove that exponential growth from the number of infections, other measures will be needed, which Rutte calls ‘the pilot light’. That pilot flame should further limit infections. “What you are working towards is that you try to prevent flare-ups of the virus with a strong pilot light,” Rutte said.
The pilot flame consists of measures such as a mandatory corona ticket for access in more places. Or about the controversial 2G measure, where people only need to be cured or vaccinated to receive a QR code. It is not yet clear whether there is a parliamentary majority for this measure.
