All ministers and secretaries of state met tonight to re-discuss the report, which found that the fundamentals of the rule of law have been violated by the Tax Authorities’ fraud hunt.
Insiders reported earlier that Rutte wants to know from the coalition partners before the parliamentary debate next week whether they still support the cabinet. He himself finds it undesirable to step down now that the cabinet is so busy with the corona crisis.
Extremely unpredictable
“They agree on content,” says political reporter Ron Fresen. “But now that the political question is on the table, it is getting exciting. The outcome is extremely unpredictable. Van Rutte does not have to resign, but if one of the coalition partners considers it necessary, it will happen.”
During the press conference about the corona measures, Rutte said tonight that if the cabinet steps down and becomes outgoing, that does not apply to the corona policy in any case. “You remain missionary on that, maybe not officially, but mental.”
Victims of the benefits affair called today in a video message to resign. According to Rutte, that message has arrived and he and State Secretary Van Huffelen of Finance also want to continue talking to the victims about the aftermath of the report.
