Rutte: no one has the right not to be offended | Inland

Rutte, who also teaches two hours a week at a VMBO school, says that there is no better place than education to convey core values of the Dutch constitutional state to young people. He wants to emphasize how essential it is that freedom of speech can be discussed without external pressure. He finds that teachers are being threatened for this “absurd” and something that the country should not tolerate.

Rutte does not want to say much about his own experiences as a teacher at a school in The Hague. He does say that he feels “in no way” inhibited.

According to the prime minister, there is a small group within Islam that “misuses faith as a tool to intimidate.” The vast majority of the Islamic community in the Netherlands profess the faith “in a decent way in line with our democratic legal order.”

He warns those who want to abuse their faith to threaten: “Then this society will turn against you.”
