Rutte: “I still follow politics from a distance”

KOH SAMUIWhile feverish attempts are being made in The Hague to form a new cabinet, the Netherlands is wondering where Mark Rutte has gone. He is still formally Prime Minister of our country, albeit in a resigning capacity. After a short search we find Rutte on the beach of Koh Samui in Thailand.

Rutte is surprised when we meet him in the lobby of his hotel. “How did you know I’m here?” he asks in surprise. After some insistence, he makes time for a short chat and a photo on the beach. “I still follow politics from a distance,” Rutte laughs. “I know that the PVV has become the largest party and that Wilders presents himself as a kind of everyone’s friend. Well, he does. I have to honestly tell you that it doesn’t interest me that much anymore.”

Rutte takes a sip of his beer. “Singha, do you know that? They drink that everywhere here,” he says. “Once I made the decision to leave politics, I quickly finished it. Here in Thailand I am busy with completely different things. Naps on the beach, Singha and of course all the beautiful things Thailand has to offer. They have these small, delicate women here.”

Rutte looks at his phone for a moment and then waves to the waiter: “Still nothing from Ronald, so we’ll only do two more.”
