NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed gratitude to Greece for its support to Ukraine against Russian aggression and “welcomed” Athens’ commitment to speed up F-16 training for pilots and the Ukrainian technicians, “giving them strength in this brutal war.”
“Our support for Ukraine has allowed them to continue fighting, but we must go further to change the trajectory of this conflict,” Rutte added. The NATO secretary also recalled that last month Athens concluded a bilateral security agreement with Kiev, on the sidelines of the European Council meeting in Brussels. Rutte stressed that Greece has allocated 3% of its GDP to defense, recalling the nation’s long-standing commitment to strengthening its security, and called its armed forces “highly qualified”. The secretary general added that Russia’s use of North Korean weapons and troops, Iranian drones and Chinese dual-use goods has led to an “increasingly dangerous” environment, posing a significant “challenge to peace and security global”.
During his visit to Athens, Rutte also met with Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.
