Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte does not rule out that the cabinet will enlist the help of the army to stop the riots and looting of recent days. “The deployment of the army is not taboo, but not necessary now”, said Rutte in the parliamentary debate on Wednesday.
According to the prime minister, the police can now keep the matter under control and the army is already being called upon in the form of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. If more manpower is needed, then that is possible, according to the prime minister.
Geert Wilders called on the cabinet to deploy the army. “Ultimately, the rig only bows to the hard hand,” said the PVV leader.
He blames the cabinet for reacting too laxly to the unrest of recent days. “The cabinet let things get out of hand for three days.”
The entire Chamber condemned the riots, but does not feel the need to call in the military for help at the moment. All political groups agree that the perpetrators must be dealt with harshly, but also warn against letting things escalate further.
