VVD leader Rutte and CDA leader Hoekstra have a disagreement about the treasury when the corona is over. Rutte thinks Hoekstra makes too many expensive election promises.
Hoekstra, in turn, thinks it is wrong that the VVD says in its election pamphlet that the party will not make cuts in the coming years. “Anyone who says that there will not be cutbacks is telling a myth,” said the CDA leader in the NOS election debate on NPO Radio 1.
The parliamentary elections will be held in just over two weeks and the parties tried to widen their differences in the first major campaign debate. The current outgoing cabinet of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie is now spending tens of billions of euros to prevent bankruptcies and help companies. This financial injection does not necessarily mean that a lot of cutbacks have to be made, says the cabinet.
