On October 13, Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich broke the world record in the women’s marathon. The 30-year-old athlete won the 42-kilometer race in Chicago (USA), completing the distance in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 57 seconds, Zakon.kz reports.
The previous record, which was 2 hours 11 minutes and 52 seconds, belonged to Tigist Assefe (Ethiopia) and was shown at the Berlin Marathon last September.
Chepngetich improved the world record by almost two minutes.
Followed to the finish line were Sutume Kebede (Ethiopia) and Irin Cheptai (Kenya).

Ruth Chepngetich, who is the 2019 world champion, won the Chicago Marathon for the third time in her career.
The Chicago Marathon has been running since 1977 and is part of the World Marathon Majors series, which also includes races in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin and New York. The marathon distance is 42 kilometers 195 meters.
This year’s competition on the streets of Chicago was dedicated to the memory of record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who sadly he died in an accident in the winter of 2024.
