Rutger Bregman wins NS Audience Award 2020 with Most people are good | NOW

Rutger Bregman has Wednesday evening in M received the NS Public Award. Most people are good, which was one of the best-selling books in the past year, was chosen by the public with 26 percent of the vote.

Bregman wins a sculpture by Jeroen Henneman, a cash prize of 7,500 euros and free travel by train for a year.

The author received a Golden Book for it in July Most people are good, in which he delves into human history. That means that at least 200,000 copies have been sold. Most people are good has now appeared in 31 countries. The historian made his debut in 2012 with With the knowledge of the past.

A record number of votes were cast, according to presenter Margriet van der Linden. There were only eighteen hundred votes between first and second place.

The other nominees were Astrid Holleeder with Family secrets, Edwin Schoon with THAT’S ENOUGH (autobiography of Marco van Basten), Herman Finkers with The course ‘Dealing with disappointments’ is again canceled, Geert Mak with Great expectations and Roxane van Iperen met ‘t Hooge Nest. All books were the best-selling in the past year and therefore automatically competed for the book price.

Van Basten, Van Iperen, Bregman and Mak were present in the studio, Finkers was there via a live connection. Miljuschka Witzenhausen was there on behalf of her mother Astrid Holleeder.

First nomination for Bregman

It was the first nomination for Bregman, Van Iperen and Schoon. Mak has already won the prize twice, in 2000 with The century of my father and in 2004 with In Europe. Holleeder was nominated in 2017 with her bestseller Judas and in 2018 with Diary of a witness. Finkers also has two previous nominations in his pocket: I am an Almeloër! in 1997 and The girl with the ovaries in 1998. At the time, the prize was still called the Trouw Public Prize.

Last year, 111,000 votes were cast and was Ringing kink by Martine Bijl named favorite book.
