Early Wednesday morning a fire broke out at OVH’s data center in Strasbourg. Everyone on the scene is said to have escaped safely, but the fire caused major damage to two buildings. Among all that was lost were several European servers for the survival game Rust.
Later in the afternoon, developer Facepunch Studios was able to confirm that 25 servers were affected. Most are now up and running again, but the player data could not be saved.
Update:
We’ve confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH data centre fire. We’re now exploring replacing the affected servers.
Data will be unable to be restored.

Players from these servers will have to start all over again, which happens quite often in Rust. The game resets servers regularly, so that all progress is lost anyway – although this restart of course comes very abruptly.
Console version on the way
Rust originally came out in early access in 2013, before it got its full launch in 2018. In recent months, the survival game has become more and more popular on Steam, and now it will soon be released on console as well.
Earlier this month, Double Eleven, the console version publisher, confirmed that Rust will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this spring. So far, no one has said anything about a version for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X / S, but those who have one of the new consoles will have the option to play Rust via backward compatibility.
The survival genre is still alive and well.
