Russia’s Veto of UN Resolution on Nuclear Weapons in Space Sparks Controversy

Russia vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution against the proliferation of weapons, including nuclear weapons, in outer space.

Details: 13 out of 15 members of the Security Council (US, UK, France, Algeria, Guyana, Ecuador, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Malta, Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Switzerland, Japan) voted for the document which gave Japan and the United States included. Only Russia spoke against it, China stopped.

According to the draft resolution, “all states, especially those with significant space capabilities, should actively contribute to achieving the goal of the peaceful use of outer space and the prevention of an arms race in space out.”

As US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at a meeting of the Security Council, Russia’s vote against the draft document could indicate that Moscow is hiding something.

“If you stick to the rules, why don’t you support a resolution that confirms them?” – she asked rhetorically to the representatives of the Russian delegation “What can you hide?

According to Thomas-Greenfield, “China has demonstrated that it would rather protect Russia as its junior partner than the global non-proliferation regime.
