Russia’s Veto of UN Humanitarian Aid Operation in Syria’s Northwestern Region Rekindles Concerns

Jakarta

Russia has vetoed steps to renew a United Nations (UN) humanitarian aid operation to the region Syria northwestern part of Türkiye. The assistance is known for the next nine months.

That veto was overturned by Moscow after submitting a proposal to extend the operation by just six months.

Reported by Reuters, Wednesday (12/7/2023), the mandate for the UN humanitarian aid operation, which has delivered aid such as food, medicine and shelter since 2014, officially ended on Monday (11/7) local time.

China abstained in the first vote in the UN Security Council to renew the operation for nine months, proposed by Switzerland and Brazil. Meanwhile, 13 other UN Security Council member states provided support for the renewal of the operation.

The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, indicated that the humanitarian aid operation could not be saved. After dropping the veto and proposing a six-month extension proposed by Moscow, Nebenzia said it was better not to proceed with the relief operation.

“If our draft is not supported, then we can proceed and close the cross-border mechanism. We will not accept a technical extension for a certain period of time,” he stressed.

Moscow’s proposal for a six-month extension was also voted on at the UN Security Council meeting this week. But only Russia and China backed the proposal.
