Russia’s Vehicle Ban in Estonia: Compliance with EU Sanctions

The driver of the car in Luhama claimed to be an employee of the embassy at the border control point, however, the document check revealed that the person has a citizen’s passport and the car does not have a diplomatic registration number plate, the Estonian Tax and Customs Department informed.

Sanctions are not applied to cars with diplomatic license plates. The person who was driving the car was informed about the current sanctions applicable to motor vehicles with Russian registration plates. As a result of the discussions, the person decided to return to Russia.

It has already been announced that from September 13, a ban on vehicles with Russian registration plates entering the country is in effect. Thus, Estonia complies with the European Commission’s (EC) additional interpretation of the sanctions against Russia announced on September 8, according to which vehicles registered in Russia are not allowed to enter the territory of the European Union (EU).

A similar ban also exists in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Finland, and will also be introduced in Norway.
