Russia’s Secret Weapon: Dense Thickets Thwart Ukraine’s Counteroffensive, Retired NATO Officer Reveals

Retired NATO officer Stavros Atlamazoglou in a piece for portal 19FortyFive spoke about the not-so-obvious problem that the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine faced when implementing the order of the command to counteroffensive. It turns out that thickets in the south of Ukraine prevent them from achieving results.

It is for this reason that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not manage to break through the Russian line of defense.

“The Russian military is skillfully defending itself, holding back the advance of Ukrainian troops and keeping the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the intricacies of defense lines,” Atlamazoglou said.

Dense thickets, the expert is sure, prevent the Ukrainian military from using armored vehicles, without which it is impossible to break through any defensive line. All this “drives them crazy”, especially since the offensive on foot is very dangerous. Many places in the forest are mined, but the shells are not visible at all, which leads to additional losses.

“On the footage from the hostilities, you can see how Ukrainian soldiers step on anti-personnel mines, because they don’t see them because of the thickets,” Atlamazoglou said.

EADaily recalls that the Ukrainian counter-offensive began on July 4-5, but so far has not brought any noticeable results.
