Rail logistics remain a vital component in sustaining Russia’s invasion. Russia uses its rail networks to transport ammunition, armored vehicles, fuel and personnel into Ukraine. This is stated in the latest intelligence report of the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain.
It is noted that the railway network in occupied Ukraine largely remains in service. However, it has been rendered obsolete by sporadic blockades by Ukrainian artillery, airstrikes and acts of sabotage.
In previous conflicts, the exhaustion of rail transport required targeted, sustained and repeated attacks by air and/or ground forces.
British intelligence indicates that Russia is almost certainly continuing to maintain and improve its rail lines of communication in Ukraine and is building a new rail line to Mariupol, which will shorten travel times for supplies to the Zaporozhye Front.
Russia is using civilian contractors and equipment to complete this project, which is likely to make it more difficult to carry out attacks and preserve the capabilities of the railway brigades for urgent tasks elsewhere.
The new line falls within the conditional range of Ukrainian long-range precision strike systems, the British Ministry of Defense notes.
