A coffee shop and grocery store in the village of Hroza in the Kharkiv region were attacked by missiles on the afternoon of the 5th. Piles of bricks, broken metal and building materials were still left at the scene.
Local officials told public broadcaster Suspilne that this was the deadliest attack in Kharkiv since Russia’s invasion in February last year. It also appeared to be one of the highest civilian casualties of any single attack in Russia.
Local police told state television that the number of people killed was 51, with six others injured and three missing. Some of the victims were mourners who gathered at the coffee shop after attending a ceremony in the village for a fallen soldier.
Reuters reported that Zelensky was attending the European Political Community summit in Spain and said in a video message published in the evening: “This is an ordinary shop and coffee in a village in the Kharkiv region. It was a well-planned missile attack on the store. It is impossible for the Russian army not to know where they were attacking. This was not a blind attack.”
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said local officials were sitting down to have a meal when the missile struck. “The commemoration ceremony was attended by people from every house,” Klimenko told Ukrainian television. “This is a terrible tragedy.”
Citing preliminary information, Klimenko said the attack was carried out by an Iskander ballistic missile. He said the attack was clearly targeted and Ukrainian security services had launched an investigation.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said the terrorists deliberately carried out the attack during lunch hours to ensure maximum casualties. There are no military targets there. This was a heinous crime meant to scare Ukrainians.
