Russia’s Jamming Technology Renders US and Western Allies’ Missiles Useless in Ukraine: Expert Analysis

KYIV Russia has succeeded in disabling advanced missiles United States of America (US) and Western allies used in Ukraine. You do this by using technology that randomizes the GPS coordinates of these Western weapons.

Bryan Clark, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute—an institution think tank US—tells to BBC that Russia’s electronic warfare capabilities have significantly increased during the conflict with Ukraine.

According to him, Russia is now deploying hundreds of small mobile electronic warfare units along its front lines, having previously relied on bulky and cumbersome units that can be easily targeted.

Clark said to BBC that Russian technology can interfere with the GPS coordinates of missiles, disable Ukrainian drones, and suppress radar signals used by Ukraine to identify targets for attack.

One such system, the R-330Zh Zhitel, is capable of suppressing satellite signals.

“Zhitel can interfere with GPS signals within 30 km of intruders,” said Clark, who was quoted Business InsiderSaturday (5/8/2023).

“For a weapon like the JDAM bomb, which only uses a GPS receiver to point it at the target, it’s enough to lose its geolocation and miss the target.”

This is not the first time that concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, in Ukraine, where institutions think tank English; The Royal United Services Institute, in January cited leaked US documents that officials expressed concern about Russia interfering with the JDAM’s GPS coordinates.
