“Any further aggression against Ukraine’s sovereignty will be costly,” Merkel said during a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Merkel added that easing the situation on the border of Ukraine and in the east of the country should be the preferred option. The Chancellor also called on the EU to be ready to impose additional sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine and the border of Belarus and Poland.
“The EU needs to unite in the issues of” arming “migrants by Belarus against Poland and the deployment of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine,” Merkel added.
However, she expressed regret that she could not take part in another meeting in the Normandy format.
