“From the reports, I think we can already say that Putin has deployed tanks and troops. From that it can be concluded that the invasion of Ukraine has already begun,” British Health Minister Sajid Javid told Sky News, Tuesday (22/2), as quoted by Antara. quoted from Reuters.
“The Russian people, President (Vladimir) Putin, have decided to attack Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he added.
As a result of this Russian movement, Javid said Britain would impose sanctions on Moscow.
“We will impose sanctions as we stated before,” he continued.
Javid added that the sanctions will be conveyed in an official statement by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, in the near future.
“I believe we will apply the sanctions according to the person responsible for this flagrant violation of international law,” Javid said.
Separately, PM Johnson and Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to be “determined for a full-scale invasion” of Ukraine. This was stated by Johnson while chairing an emergency national security meeting on Tuesday (22/2) morning.
Local media said Britain’s first “strike of economic sanctions” on Russia will be set in the House of Commons around 1230 GMT.
Britain has long threatened to revoke Russian companies’ access to US dollars and British pounds. This policy has the potential to prevent the company from getting capital in London.
To date, the UK has not disclosed which Russian entities will be sanctioned. However, Johnson had said that Russian banks would be the targets of these sanctions.
The possibility of imposing these sanctions is even greater considering that Putin has recognized the independence of two regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk. The two regions in eastern Ukraine have been controlled by pro-Russian separatist groups.
Not only acknowledging independence, Putin also sent troops to the two troubled regions. Putin cited his forces in Donetsk and Luhansk as peacekeepers.
A Reuters witness saw tanks and other military hardware moving into Donetsk after Putin officially recognized the independence of the two separatist zones on Monday (21/2).
A number of countries condemned Putin’s actions. The United States even considers Russian troops in Donetsk and Luhansk not to be “peacekeepers” but a force to launch a military invasion of Ukraine more broadly.
