The bill was introduced to deter Belarus from allowing Russia to use its territory to invade Ukraine.
The document provides for sanctions against Belarus or another country that will support Russia’s aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
“Belarus is allowing thousands of Russian troops into its country to line up on the border with Ukraine. The US must make it clear that any country that supports Russia’s attempts to invade Ukraine will face tough economic and diplomatic sanctions,” Lankford said.
Thus, tough sanctions against Belarus can be imposed for the following actions:
- joint participation with Russia in the invasion of Ukraine;
- providing material, tactical or other support to the Russian invasion;
- deployment on its territory of Russian troops participating in the attack;
- cooperation with Russian intelligence during the invasion;
- purchase or transfer of lethal weapons used in the invasion of Ukraine.
