According to her, Russia continues to wage a hybrid war against Georgia, using all its tools. Speaking about the challenges that Georgia faces in 2023, the Georgian President recalled the war in Ukraine.
“Russia could not break Ukraine, moreover, it could not undermine the unity and solidarity of Europe and even strengthened it. Despite the failure or because of it, Russia has launched a new hybrid war (a war without war) against Georgia, for which it is using everything uniforms and weapons,” Zurabishvili noted.
She also emphasized that Russia’s plan to transform the Ochamchira port into a military base aims to transfer the confrontation to the Black Sea, into their territorial waters, thereby posing a threat to the strategic perspective of the Black Sea.
Russia intensifies annexation of occupied territories
Zurabishvili spoke about the announcement of mobilization in the occupied territories, as well as steps taken towards annexation, mentioning the seizure of the Ochamchira port, the state residence in Bichvinta and the Sukhumi Babushera airport.
According to her, constant intimidation, persecution, kidnapping and killing of local residents continues along the line of occupation.
Relations between Georgia and Russia
The official Georgian authorities consider Abkhazia and South Ossetia as territories occupied by the Russian Federation.
Earlier, the head of the occupation administration of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, said that he allegedly agreed with Russia that it would create a base in the region where it would station the Black Sea Fleet.
However, the Georgian parliament decided not to consider a draft resolution condemning the Russian plans to build a Black Sea Fleet base in occupied Abkhazia.
Georgia also tried to justify itself for not joining EU sanctions against Russia.
